Aga Khan Hospital Dar es Salaam Hosts Ministry of Health Mentorship Session to Combat Antimicrobial Resistance
Dar es Salaam, September 26, 2025 — The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam, successfully hosted a vital mentorship and supervision session earlier this week, spearheaded by the Ministry of Health as part of the national initiative to curb antimicrobial resistance (AMR). This collaborative effort underscores Tanzania’s ongoing commitment to safeguarding public health through strengthened antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).
The session was led by Prof. Jeremiah Seni, Chairman of the AMS National Technical Working Group and representative of the Catholic University of Health and Allied Sciences (CUHAS), alongside Joram Adam Sungura, a seasoned pharmacist and AMR/AMS expert from the Ministry of Health.
Under the guidance of Medical Director Dr. Harrison Chuwa, the hospital’s AMS Committee engaged in capacity-building activities centred on antimicrobial use (AMU), antimicrobial consumption (AMC) data collection and utilisation, AMR surveillance, and the application of WHONET software for data analysis and reporting.
Aligned with the objectives of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2023–2028), the session focused on promoting rational antibiotic use, enhancing data-driven monitoring systems, and strengthening reporting mechanisms. Through joint supervision and mentoring, the Ministry team provided practical guidance and training to ensure alignment with national priorities and foster effective multi-sectoral collaboration in combating this pressing public health challenge.
This initiative reaffirms Tanzania’s commitment to combating AMR through evidence-based practices and strengthening its health systems, ultimately safeguarding the health of all its citizens.
